It’s no secret that Cheeky is a big fan of Pops for Champagne. In fact, we <heart> it pretty deeply. The Champagne, the cocktails, the delicious food menu, the sexy ambience… it’s pretty much a Cheeky girl’s personal paradise. Yet, perhaps, the most exciting and unique thing about Pops is their underground live music lounge, Pops Jazz Club.
Infamously known for their classic jazz acts and Monday night industry parties that showcase the city’s most talented bartenders, mixologists and chefs, Pops now has something new to offer in the form of a true cabaret. Last Wednesday, I pseudo-accidentally stumbled upon what could be the best act in the city. Welcome to the stage: Amy and Freddy. It’s a contemporary spin on the American-style cabaret, led by songstress, Amy Armstrong, who is without question a force to be reckoned with. Within mere seconds of hearing her voice and watching her command the crowd, it’s obvious that this woman is a pro. She’s brazen, sassy, witty, self-deprecating and has a powerful, soulful, pitch perfect voice that gave me goose bumps, made me laugh and “woot” all at once. (Yes, she’s really that good.) Combined with Freddy Allen’s impeccable musical arrangements and sly repartee, the two of them rock out to everything from Etta James to Janis Joplin to Christina Aguilera to originals.
The vibe in Pops Jazz Club is homey, cozy and intimate to begin with and Amy and Freddy couldn’t be a more perfect fit for the space. Unlike many cabaret acts I’ve personally seen, Amy and Freddy break down the “third wall” (otherwise known as the separation between the audience and the performers) and make you feel like you are friends in their own personal home. The audience is encouraged to interact, shout out requests and sass back at Amy (because she will no doubt sass at you). In fact, I think it’s safe to say that Ms. Armstrong is one of the cheekiest chicks around.
So if you’re looking for some genuine Chi-town entertainment, fine Champagne (and don’t forget about those damn fine truffle fries with garlic aioli), check out Pops every Wednesday at 9 pm for a whole lotta’ cheekiness…
