We all love Mexico: the beautiful beaches, fresh fruit (okay fine, the fresh fruit in margaritas) and crystal blue skies. But when we travel to exotic destinations we tend to overlook the fact that while we’re laying beachside with a Corona, a majority of that country has a population living in underdeveloped regions.
Hate to be Debbie Downer over here, but it’s nice to have a reality check, something to keep us Cheeky girls grounded and encourage us to be charitable.
Next Thursday, June 11th, at The Edge on Division (1700 W. Division ), Fiesta Mundial will be held in the hopes of raising $10,000 to go to the Mujeres Enlazadas, an organization offering health care and educational services to women and adolescent girls in the Patzcuaro lake basin area of Michoacán. Co-hosted by Alderman Manny Flores and State Representative Toni Berrios, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm you can sip on Domain de Canton drinks as you bid on silent auction items. For $30 in advance and $40 at the door, you’ll be able to mix and mingle as you nosh on appetizers, wine and beer.
A little bit more about the organization…
The inland region of the Patzucuaro lake basin rests in central Mexico between Guadalajara and Ciudad de Mexico. The money will go towards building a health education center that will teach and train local women to become nurses and midwives.
Students and nurses will be drawn from the small villages and surrounding areas and the Mujeres Enlazadas will empower and educate these local women so that they can better serve their communities. With a bare bones health care system, a patriarchal society and no access to quality health care, it’s the women of these Mexican villages who are tasked with helping each other.
In addition to helping raise money for the health center, a portion of the proceeds will provide internships and residency experiences for international students with a passion for women’s health and underserved populations.
