Spring Into Summer with Sculpture-Inspired Rope Accessories by kim peiffer 05/06/2009

I love jewelry, (duh, what girl doesn’t?) and I simply can’t hear enough about new designers and new trends in the world of accessories. But how many times can you make a ground-breaking new kind of jewelry from silver or gold? Which is why Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer is a refreshing look at something a little different.

The line of jewelry is inspired by Orly’s sculpture and focuses on the detail of the knotted rope. Smaller in scale than the sculpture, the pieces are wearable while still functioning as large and empowering objects. The result is a line of bold necklaces, bracelets and earrings that make great statement pieces and are the perfect accessory for spring and summer.

“We keep the process somewhat raw and process-oriented similar to Orly’s sculpture. They are obviously handmade but they stay away from the crafty aesthetic and more towards clean and silk,” Orly tells me.

But how did this all begin? It was one happy accident, as a matter of fact.

“Our collaboration began as a happy accident,” Orly says. “Jaclyn came by my studio when I asked her to bring me some jewelry to borrow for an event. When she came over we ended up playing around with some of the ropes I had lying in the studio and some of the chains she had brought with her. We made our first piece and realized the possibilities that lay before us.”

And the rest is history. The jewelry line took off and the biz partners are now launching a new website, debuting May 8th.
